A'DAM Lookout Amsterdam: The View Over the IJ & the Edge Swing
A'DAM Lookout is Amsterdam's highest public observation deck — a 360° panorama from the top of the A'DAM Tower in Amsterdam-Noord, reached by a free ferry across the IJ, and home to 'Over the Edge', Europe's highest swing. Here is its story, the highlights, and how to visit.

A'DAM Lookout at a glance
Location: Overhoeksplein 1, Amsterdam-Noord, across the IJ from Centraal Station. Allow: about 1 hour. Entry: ticketed (swing extra). Nearby: the Eye Filmmuseum, NEMO Science Museum and Centraal Station.
The story of the tower
The A'DAM Tower began life in 1971 as the headquarters of the Shell oil company, and for decades Amsterdammers knew it simply as the Shell Tower — or the Toverflats, the 'Magic Flats'. When Shell left, the building was completely reinvented and reopened in 2016 as a vertical city of music and entertainment: offices for the music industry, a hotel, clubs, restaurants — and on top, the A'DAM Lookout observation deck.
The name is a triple play: A'DAM is Amsterdam's nickname, the tower stands on the IJ waterfront of Amsterdam-Noord, and the crown on top nods to the city's coat of arms — the white mast above the deck carries the three St Andrew's crosses of the Amsterdam flag. Today it is the most popular viewpoint in the city, and the swing on its roof has become one of Amsterdam's signature thrills.

What you will see
- The 360° panorama — the whole city at your feet: the canal ring, Centraal Station, the harbour and, on clear days, the North Sea coast and the polders stretching to the horizon.
- Over the Edge — Europe's highest swing, carrying you out over the edge of the tower at 100 metres up, with Amsterdam literally below your feet.
- The ride up — a high-speed lift with a light-and-sound show that sets the mood before the doors open onto the view.
- The interactive exhibition — screens and displays that identify the landmarks spread out below you and tell the story of Amsterdam-Noord.
- The sky bar and revolving restaurant — drinks and dinner with the same view, one floor below the open-air deck.

Tickets
Entry to the observation deck is ticketed, and booking a time slot online is recommended at weekends and in summer, when sunset slots sell out first. The 'Over the Edge' swing is a paid add-on bought on top of the deck ticket, and riders must meet a minimum height requirement. Combination tickets with the Eye Filmmuseum next door are sometimes available.

Getting to A'DAM Lookout is half the fun: walk through Centraal Station to the ferry piers on the IJ side and take the free Buiksloterweg ferry — it runs around the clock, takes about three minutes, and foot passengers and cyclists are welcome. From the landing on the north bank, the tower is a two-minute walk. Metro line 52 (Noord/Zuidlijn) also runs from Centraal to Noorderpark, a short walk away.
Practical tips
- Book a slot about an hour before sunset — you get daylight, golden hour and the city lights in one visit.
- Check the weather before you go: the deck is open-air, and a clear day makes all the difference to the view.
- Buy the swing add-on when you book — it sells out on busy days and queues build up on the roof.
- Pair the visit with the Eye Filmmuseum next door and lunch on its waterside terrace for an easy Amsterdam-Noord afternoon.
