Vondelpark at a glance
Area: between Leidseplein and the museum quarter, Amsterdam-Zuid. Allow: 1–2 hours for a stroll, half a day with a picnic. Entry: completely free. Nearby: the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk on Museumplein, and Leidseplein's cafés at the northeast corner.
Why it is famous
Opened in 1865 and named after the 17th-century poet Joost van den Vondel — whose statue still stands in the park — the Vondelpark is the green heart of Amsterdam. Around ten million people visit each year: joggers at dawn, picnickers on the lawns, families at the playgrounds and concertgoers at the open-air theatre in summer.
It was laid out in the romantic English landscape style, with winding paths, curved ponds and long sight lines under mature trees — designed to feel like countryside inside the city, and it still does.

What to see and do
- The ponds — the park's long ponds are its prettiest feature, with willows, waterfowl and reflections of the trees. The large pond near the centre is the classic picnic spot.
- The Vondel statue — the 1867 monument to the poet near the middle of the park.
- The Rose Garden (Rosarium) — a quiet corner with dozens of rose varieties, best in early summer.
- Cafés and terraces — several pavilions in the park serve coffee, lunch and drinks with outdoor seating, including the historic Vondelpark pavilions.
- Playgrounds and open lawns — the big lawns are where Amsterdam comes to sunbathe, barbecue and play football on warm days.

Open-air theatre
From late spring to early autumn, the Vondelpark Open-Air Theatre stages free performances — concerts, dance, cabaret and children's shows — on weekend days. Entry is free with a small voluntary contribution. Check the theatre's programme before your visit; popular summer shows fill the lawn quickly.
Getting there
The park stretches between Leidseplein and Amstelveenseweg. The main entrance is on Stadhouderskade, a two-minute walk from Leidseplein; the eastern end meets Museumplein, so it combines naturally with a museum day. Trams stop at Leidseplein and along the park's northern edge. From Centraal Station it is about 30 minutes on foot through the Canal Ring.

Practical tips
- Come early on summer weekends — the lawns fill up by midday.
- Rent a bike and ride the loop: it is one of the easiest, safest cycles in the city.
- Combine with Museumplein: the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum are at the park's eastern end.
- Bring a picnic — the park's cafés are pleasant but the lawns are the real experience.
