The order you visit Rome's attractions matters more than you'd think. Light, crowds, opening windows and which neighbourhood you'll eat in all flip what's a magical visit into a queueing exercise. Here's the order that works — by day, by hour, by reason.

3 principles behind the order

• Timed paid sight first. Earliest morning slot at the Colosseum, Vatican or Borghese — crowds and heat both grow through the day.
• Free, open-all-day sights second. Pantheon, Trevi, piazzas — they're best in late-afternoon light anyway.
• Sunset viewpoint, then dinner. End every day at a viewpoint near your dinner neighbourhood: Pincio → Spanish Steps area; Gianicolo → Trastevere; Vittoriano rooftop → Monti.

Day 1 — Ancient Rome (ordered)

1. Colosseum — 08:30 first slot (book ahead).
2. Arch of Constantine — 30-second walk after exiting.
3. Roman Forum + Palatine Hill — same ticket, enter via Via Sacra.
4. San Pietro in Vincoli (Michelangelo's Moses) — free, 5 min uphill from the Forum.
5. Lunch in Monti.
6. Capitoline Hill terrace — best free view of the Forum.
7. Vittoriano rooftop — paid lift, 360° city view.
8. Largo di Torre Argentina + Pantheon as the light softens.
9. Trevi Fountain + Spanish Steps after dark — far fewer people.
10. Dinner in Monti.

Day 2 — Vatican (ordered)

1. Vatican Museums — 07:30 early entry (book a small-group tour).
2. Sistine Chapel — at the natural end of the Museums route.
3. St. Peter's Basilica — via the chapel back door (if your tour allows) or 10 min walk around.
4. (Optional) Dome climb — only if knees are fresh.
5. Lunch in Borgo Pio or Prati.
6. Castel Sant'Angelo + rooftop.
7. Ponte Sant'Angelo at golden hour.
8. Piazza Navona aperitivo on the way to dinner.
9. Dinner in Trastevere.

Day 3 — Borghese + slow Rome (ordered)

4. Lunch in Campo de' Fiori or the Jewish Ghetto.

Worst orders (avoid these)

• Colosseum at midday. Maximum crowd + maximum heat.
• Trevi at lunch. Phone-and-selfie-stick wall, harsh overhead light.
• Vatican Museums in the afternoon. You'll shuffle through the Sistine in 90 seconds.
• Spanish Steps then sunset at the Pincio in reverse order. You'll climb the steps in the dark.
