Best Photo Spots Around the Pantheon

Almost everyone photographs the Pantheon the same way: head-on from the middle of the piazza. It is a fine shot and a crowded one. There are at least eight better positions within a five-minute walk of the portico.
Each is listed below with the timing that actually works, plus the rules that apply inside the building.
Photography rules inside
The Pantheon is an active church as well as a monument. Personal photography is normally allowed, but photography during Mass is not, flash and tripods are not permitted, and staff will ask you to move on if you block the centre of the rotunda. Dress code — covered shoulders and knees — applies at the door. Check the current Mass schedule before planning an interior shoot.
1. The obelisk fountain frame
Stand at the northern end of Piazza della Rotonda, facing the portico. Crouch low so the Egyptian obelisk on the sixteenth-century fountain lines up between the portico columns. Fountain, obelisk, columns and pediment in one frame. Best at sunrise, when the square is nearly empty.
2. The elephant obelisk — Piazza della Minerva
Walk around the right side of the Pantheon into the small square behind it. Piazza della Minerva holds the marble elephant carrying a small Egyptian obelisk, unveiled in 1667. The monument was designed by Bernini and carved by his assistant Ercole Ferrata, so credit both. Shoot from the southern side with the elephant in front and the rotunda's rear wall behind. Very few visitors take this picture.
3. The rear rotunda view
Continue around the back on Via della Minerva and Salita de' Crescenzi. From here you see the bare brick exterior of the rotunda, never intended to be a display face, with the pattern of the internal relieving arches showing through the masonry. These lanes usually carry far less foot traffic than the piazza, so an architectural shot is easier here.
4. Rooftop bars and terraces
Several hotel terraces within a few minutes' walk look over the dome or across the rooftops toward it. Access rules change often, so treat any specific venue as a lead rather than a guarantee:
- Hotel terraces immediately around Piazza della Rotonda give the closest dome views; most require a reservation or a drinks minimum.
- Terraces near Piazza Navona give a wider panorama with the dome in the middle distance.
- Opening is seasonal and weather-dependent — call or check the venue's own page the same day.
Sunset is the payoff hour, when the dome takes warm light and the skyline behind it turns pink.

Move toward the centre of the rotunda, point straight up and let the sky blow out. The 140 coffers ring the bright circle in concentric silhouettes. Keep out of the way of the flow of visitors, and do not shoot while a service is in progress.
6. From inside the bronze doors
Step just inside the threshold, turn around and shoot back out through the open doors: bronze leaves, portico columns and a slice of the piazza framed inside. Best mid-morning, when the doors are fully open and the entrance is not yet packed.
7. Blue-hour façade
Return to Piazza della Rotonda about half an hour after sunset. The façade is floodlit warm against a deep blue sky — the strongest exterior shot of the building. Use night mode or brace against the fountain rim; setting up a tripod in a crowded square can obstruct people and staff or officers may ask you to move it.
8. Bonus, not the Pantheon: Piazza di Pietra columns
Three minutes east, this small square holds eleven Corinthian columns from the Temple of Hadrian, embedded in a later palace wall. It is not a view of the Pantheon — it is a separate Hadrianic monument two minutes away, and it is usually far quieter than Piazza della Rotonda. Sunrise or blue hour.
