The Pantheon is about 43.3 metres (142 ft) from the floor to the inside of the dome — conventionally the same figure as its interior diameter, which is why the rotunda is described as accommodating an inscribed sphere. It remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built.

The coffered ceiling has five rings of 28 sunken panels each — 140 in total — stepping inward towards the oculus. The coffers reduce the mass of the shell without weakening it, and the concrete mix grades from heavier aggregate low down to lighter volcanic material higher up. The transition is gradual and varies through the structure rather than being a neat two-step change from basalt to pumice.
The oculus is around 8.8 m wide and has been open to the sky since antiquity. It is the principal architectural light source; the great bronze doors admit daylight as well when open. You will often read that the opening is ringed with bronze — the original ancient facing is not something we can confirm from an authoritative published source, so we do not state it as fact.

Portico columns
- 16 monolithic shafts — 8 across the front, 8 behind in two rows

- Diameter: about 1.5 m (5 ft) at the base
- Weight: commonly estimated at around 60 tonnes per shaft; there is no published measurement for each individual column
- Material: Egyptian granite. The grey shafts are associated with Mons Claudianus in the Eastern Desert, the pink and red granite with the Aswan region
- Transport: overland to the Nile, downriver, then by sea to Ostia and up the Tiber. Distances quoted as a single precise figure depend on an assumed route
The inscribed sphere
Because the interior height and diameter are conventionally the same, the rotunda is described as accommodating an inscribed sphere: the dome forms the upper hemisphere and the lower half would just touch the floor. That equivalence is the design intent and it is legible when you stand under the oculus, even though individual surveys record the two dimensions a few centimetres apart.

Why figures vary
The Pantheon is not a machined object. Its walls are not perfectly circular, the floor has been relaid, and different surveys measure from slightly different reference points. That is why reputable sources give 43.2 m, 43.3 m and 43.4 m for the same dimension, and why the mass of the dome is always an estimate derived from assumed material densities. Any article quoting these to the centimetre without naming a survey is over-claiming.
