The Pantheon's dome — about 43.3 metres across, completed in the second century AD — is widely described as the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built, and that description still holds in 2026.
The record is real, but it is a record within a clearly defined category: domes built of plain, unreinforced concrete. This page explains what that category excludes, compares the Pantheon with the domes people usually name alongside it, and flags where the comparisons stop being like-for-like.
What "unreinforced" means
Modern structural concrete rarely stands alone. It contains a skeleton of steel bars that carries tensile forces, which plain concrete handles poorly. Take the steel out of most modern concrete structures and they would not survive their own loads for long.
The Pantheon's dome shell contains no metal reinforcement: its forces are handled by dome geometry, wall mass and the compressive strength of pozzolanic concrete. That statement applies to the concrete shell — it is not a claim that no iron or metal element exists anywhere in the building or in its later repairs.

These measurements are not perfectly equivalent. Published figures differ depending on whether an interior clear span, a structural span or an exterior dimension is being quoted, and Florence and St Peter's in particular are cited with a range of numbers. Read the table as an order-of-magnitude comparison of structural approaches, not a league table decided to the centimetre.
Why the record has lasted
The Roman combination was unusual and hard to reassemble:
- Pozzolanic concrete — durable in bulk, and produced at state scale.
- Variable-density aggregate — a shell that gets lighter as it rises.
- A massive rotunda and ring foundation — carrying the thrust into the ground.
- A thickened rim around the oculus — distributing forces around the opening while removing weight at the crown.
- State-funded labour and logistics — on a scale that was not reproduced for monolithic concrete construction in medieval Western Europe.
What followed was not a thousand-year blank. Hagia Sophia was built in the sixth century, and Byzantine and Islamic architecture produced sophisticated large domes throughout the period. Modern reinforced-concrete shells span much further, but they are different structures. The CNIT hall in Paris (1958) covers around 218 metres between just three supports — a thin reinforced vault, not a hemisphere on a circular wall. The Sydney Opera House roofs are precast ribbed shell segments derived from spherical geometry, not a hemispherical dome enclosing one circular space, so they are not a like-for-like comparison either. That is the point of the Pantheon's record: it is the largest example of a structural type nobody builds any more.
Could anyone build a bigger one?
Probably, with modern analysis and enough money — but nobody has proposed a credible project, and any figures for the cost or duration of such a build would be guesswork. Reinforced concrete and steel do the job better, cheaper and faster, so the record is likely to stand for lack of competitors rather than for lack of ability.
