The official rule
The Pantheon is the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres, an active place of worship, and its published visitor rules include a dress requirement. In the administration's own terms:

- Transparent clothing should be avoided.

A great deal of "Pantheon dress code" content states rules the administration has not published. The official information does not currently state that:
- Knees must always be covered, or that all shorts above the knee are prohibited.
- Hats must be removed as a condition of entry.
- Specific garments — crop tops, gym shorts, particular necklines — are individually banned.
- The rule begins at a particular age.
- The Vatican's dress code applies here automatically.
We also make no claims about how many people are refused entry, how often, or how consistent staff are: that would require systematic observation or an official statement, and neither exists. What is published is that staff may refuse entry, which is reason enough to dress conservatively.
What to wear
A simple, low-risk combination for any visitor:
- A top with sleeves, or a sleeveless top with a light layer over the shoulders.
- Trousers, a longer skirt or longer, plainer shorts rather than very short ones.
- Nothing sheer, and nothing markedly low-cut.
- Comfortable closed shoes — the ancient floor is uneven and slippery when rain comes through the oculus.
A scarf or light shirt in your bag is the most useful single item: it covers shoulders in seconds and works at other Rome churches too. We can't promise it will resolve every situation, because the judgement rests with staff.
Hats and church etiquette
Removing a hat or cap inside a Catholic church is normal etiquette and worth observing here, but treat it as courtesy rather than as a published entrance requirement. The same applies to keeping your voice down, not eating or drinking inside — that one is in the official rules — and stepping aside if a service begins. Summer and packing
Rome in July and August makes covered shoulders genuinely uncomfortable, which is why the scarf trick is so common. Linen or light cotton with sleeves, a longer skirt or lightweight trousers keep you compliant without overheating. If you are combining the Pantheon with St Peter's or other basilicas in the same day, dress for the strictest venue on your list and you will not need to think about it again. If you're refused entry
No official clothing service is advertised on site. The practical response is to cover up — shops around Piazza della Rotonda and the surrounding streets sell scarves and light shirts, though prices vary and we would not quote a figure — and return to the entrance. What happens to a timed ticket in that situation is not published; visits are handled in order of arrival and there is no skip-the-line option, so allow time and ask staff.
