The confusion this guide solves

Many visitors look for a standalone "Sistine Chapel ticket" and cannot find one, because it does not exist.

The facts: the Sistine Chapel is a room within the Vatican Museums complex and sits near the end of the main visitor itineraries. Ordinary Vatican Museums admission includes it, as the official ticket page states. There is no separate public chapel entrance and no separate chapel fee.

How admission works

One admission, chapel included

Vatican Museums admission grants entry to the Sistine Chapel as part of the same visit. Most standard guided Vatican Museums products include the Sistine Chapel, but confirm the itinerary on the individual listing.

Official 2026 prices

€20 full-price admission at the ticket desk. Booking through the official online ticket office adds a €5 reservation fee, giving an online total of €25. Eligible reduced admission is €10 at the ticket desk or €15 through the official online portal, including the €5 reservation fee.

Children below the age of seven enter free of charge under the official tariffs. Reduced admission normally applies to visitors aged 7–18, and to students up to age 25 who present documentation from their educational institution confirming current enrolment. Guided tours and special itineraries are priced by their operators and change frequently, so we do not publish a fixed price range for them.

Official 2026 hours

Monday to Saturday, 08:00–20:00, with last admission at 18:00. On the last Sunday of the month: 09:00–14:00, last admission 12:30. Admission is free on the last Sunday of the month, subject to the exceptions published in the official calendar. No general night-opening programme appears on the official 2026 schedule, so plan within the published hours and check the official calendar for your date.

A realistic route

Routes, gallery openings and exit arrangements vary day to day, so treat the following as AllTrips editorial planning estimates rather than a fixed itinerary:

  1. Entrance and security: Viale Vaticano, timed admission, bag check.
  2. Pinecone Courtyard and Belvedere: a short outdoor pause before the galleries.
  3. Pio-Clementino sculpture galleries: the Laocoön and the classical collections.
  4. Gallery of Maps: the frescoed corridor most visitors remember.
  5. Raphael Rooms: commonly visited shortly before the chapel.
  6. Sistine Chapel: silence, no photography, limited bench seating.
  7. Exit: independent visitors should plan on the normal museum exit.

Choosing a slot

The Vatican Museums do not publish visitor counts by hour, so we do not quote head counts. In general terms, the first admissions after 08:00 and later afternoon admissions on non-holiday weekdays tend to be calmer than the middle of the day in peak season. Nothing guarantees a quiet chapel, and any product advertising before-hours entry should be checked against an active, date-specific official listing.

Guided or self-guided

A guided visit is useful here because commentary inside the chapel is not possible under the silence rule — guides normally brief the ceiling in the preceding rooms so you enter knowing where to look. Self-guided works well too, provided you read up beforehand; audio guides are also intended to be used quietly. Full comparison in our guided vs self-guided guide.

Continuing to St Peter's

There is an internal connection between the chapel area and St Peter's Basilica, and some authorised guided visits may use it when it is operationally available. It is not a guaranteed benefit of every guided product, and independent visitors should plan on exiting through the museums and walking around to the square.
