Interactive Rome attractions map showing major sightseeing areas — landmarks, viewpoints, churches and museums grouped by neighbourhood

This is a real, working Rome attractions map — not a list dressed up as one. Every place is pinned on the interactive map below, grouped so you can see at a glance which sights sit next to each other.

Use it as a sightseeing map, a map of things to do in Rome, or simply to work out which attractions can realistically be visited together in one afternoon.

Below the map you can grab the free 30+ places Google Map for your phone, or later in the article compare it against the full 170+ pin version with vetted trattorias, gelato, rooftops, viewpoints and hidden gems most first-timers miss.

Tickets & booking priorities — what to book in advance

Not every Rome attraction needs a booking. But three of them (Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Galleria Borghese) sell out days to weeks ahead in high season, and pre-booking can simplify Pantheon entry. At St Peter's Basilica everyone remains subject to security screening — guided products do not remove the security check. Here's the shortlist by booking priority:

The attraction cards below show the booking priority next to every place, with a direct Tiqets link where relevant.

Which Rome attractions are close together?

The best thing about a Rome attractions map is knowing what to visit next without backtracking. These short walks connect pins that sit next to each other on the map above:

  • Piazza del Popolo → Spanish Steps → Trevi Fountain — about 10 + 10 minutes down through the Historic Centre.
  • Trevi Fountain → Pantheon → Piazza Navona — about 8 + 5 minutes, the classic Baroque triangle.
  • Piazza Navona → Campo de' Fiori — about 6 minutes across the centro storico.
  • Colosseum → Arch of Titus → Roman Forum → Palatine Hill — a standard Colosseum–Forum–Palatine ticket normally covers all of these on the same walk, but special ticket products (Arena, Underground, full-experience passes) have their own rules, so check what your ticket includes.
  • Roman Forum → Mercati di Traiano → Trajan's Column → Piazza Venezia → Monument to Victor Emmanuel II — about 10 minutes end to end along the Imperial Fora.
  • Circus Maximus → Aventine Keyhole → Baths of Caracalla — a quieter 15–20 minute loop just south of the Forum.
  • Vatican Museums → Sistine Chapel (inside the museum itinerary) → St Peter's Basilica → Castel Sant'Angelo — the Sistine Chapel is not an outdoor walking leg; it is reached along the museum route. From the chapel you either use the authorised group shortcut when it is included in your guided tour, or exit the Museums and walk roughly 15–20 minutes around the Vatican wall to St Peter's Square. Castel Sant'Angelo is a further 15 minutes along Via della Conciliazione.
  • Trastevere → Santa Maria in Trastevere → Janiculum Hill — allow roughly 20–30 minutes for a steep uphill climb, depending on which viewpoint you aim for, in exchange for a free panorama.
  • Piazza del Popolo → Pincio Terrace → Galleria Borghese — about 10 minutes up the ramps to the terrace, then a further 20–25 minutes across Villa Borghese to the gallery, which sits well inside the park.
  • Via Appia Antica → Catacombs of San Callisto → Catacombs of Saint Sebastian — a self-contained half-day along the ancient road.

Rome attraction tickets

Rome attractions by area

Ancient Rome

Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Arch of Titus, Mercati di Traiano, Trajan's Column, Circus Maximus and the Baths of Caracalla. The densest ancient zone in the city — you can walk from the Colosseum to Piazza Venezia in a single afternoon.

Historic Centre

Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Campo de' Fiori, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Venezia and the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II — the classic postcard loop where every major sight sits within a 15-minute walk.

Vatican & Prati

St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and Castel Sant'Angelo. Cross the river for the world's smallest state and the fortress that guards the approach.

Papal basilicas & major churches

Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano, Saint Paul Outside the Walls and Santa Maria in Trastevere — the four great pilgrimage churches outside Vatican City, all free to enter.

Neighborhoods & viewpoints

Trastevere, Janiculum Hill, Pincio Terrace and the Aventine Keyhole. Best for evening walks, free panoramas and the small side streets tourists usually miss.

Museums & galleries

Galleria Borghese, Capitoline Museums, MACRO and MAXXI. A mix of Bernini and Caravaggio in the north, Roman bronzes on the Capitoline, and Rome's two big contemporary-art museums.

Appian Way & catacombs

Via Appia Antica plus the Catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano — a self-contained half-day along the ancient road, easy to combine with the Baths of Caracalla on the way out.

Northern Rome

The Catacombs of Priscilla in the leafy Salario/Trieste area — an early-Christian catacomb well away from the tourist crowds, worth pairing with Villa Borghese for a green half-day.

Map of Things to Do in Rome Beyond the Famous Sights

Rome's sightseeing map doesn't have to stop at the Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Trevi Fountain. The map also helps you locate churches, museums, viewpoints, archaeological sites, neighbourhoods and lesser-known places that fit naturally into your route.

Use the categories to layer your day: famous landmarks for the morning, a viewpoint or neighbourhood walk before lunch, a church or museum in the afternoon, and a quiet ancient site or catacomb when the historic centre gets crowded.

3 easy Rome sightseeing routes

The map gives you the pins. These three short routes turn them into an afternoon or a full day. Each is a straight walking line — no metro required — with a link to the full step-by-step guide.

Historic Centre route — ~2.2 km · 45 min walking · 3–5 hrs total

Spanish Steps → Trevi Fountain → Pantheon → Piazza Navona → Campo de' Fiori. The classic postcard loop; best for a first afternoon. See the full route in Google Maps →

Ancient Rome route — ~2.5 km · 50 min walking · half-day total

Colosseum → Roman Forum → Palatine Hill → Capitoline Hill → Piazza Venezia. A standard Colosseum–Forum–Palatine ticket normally covers the first three; special ticket products differ, so check your booking. Open the Ancient Rome map →

Vatican route — half-day total, with one access caveat

Vatican Museums → Sistine Chapel inside the museum itinerary → either the authorised group shortcut to St Peter's when your guided tour includes it, or the roughly 15–20-minute outdoor walk around the Vatican wall to St Peter's Square after exiting the Museums → St Peter's Basilica → Castel Sant'Angelo (about 15 minutes along Via della Conciliazione). Independent visitors should plan for the outdoor route rather than assume the shortcut. Open the Vatican area map →

How to use the Rome map on your phone

  1. Open the map link on the phone you'll travel with — it launches in the Google Maps app.
  2. Tap the star to save it under Your places → Maps.
  3. Toggle category layers depending on the day (sights, food, gelato, viewpoints).
  4. Tap any pin for directions, Street View, opening hours and our notes.
  5. Download the central Rome area before your trip so streets and basic place information remain visible offline. Google Maps cannot calculate walking, cycling or public-transport directions offline, and Google My Maps custom pins may also require an internet connection. Open important routes while connected or save screenshots before leaving Wi-Fi.
