Every bathroom on the route

  1. Ground floor, just past security — biggest, cleanest, use this before you start.
  2. Pinecone Courtyard — outdoor block, ok cleanliness, short queue.
  3. Between Pio-Clementino and Gallery of Maps — small, usually queued.
  4. Before Raphael Rooms — moderate size, cleaner than #3.
  5. After the Sistine Chapel exit (Pinacoteca side) — the last option before leaving. Use it.
  6. Bar Le Carrozze cafeteria area — good bathrooms if you're eating there.

The Sistine strategy

There are no bathrooms inside the Sistine Chapel and none in the long approach from the Raphael Rooms. Go at stop #4 above. Once you're in the Chapel, plan on 20–30 minutes minimum.

Baby-change and family

Baby-change tables exist at the ground-floor bathroom (#1) and near the Pinacoteca (#5). Family bathrooms (single-user, larger) are available at #1 only.

Accessible bathrooms

Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms are at #1, #4, and #5. See our accessibility guide for the full picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there bathrooms in the Sistine Chapel?

No. The Chapel itself and the corridor leading to it have no bathrooms. Use the restroom just before the Raphael Rooms.

Which Vatican Museums bathroom is cleanest?

The one on the ground floor just past security — largest, best-maintained, shortest queue if you go before starting the route.

Is there a baby-change table?

Yes, at the ground-floor bathroom and at the Pinacoteca bathrooms near the exit. Both have folding tables.

Are the bathrooms free?

Yes — all restrooms inside the museum are free. No coin-operated turnstiles.
