Papal events during Easter Week
These don't close the museum but they DO clog Vatican-area transit and St. Peter's Square:
- Palm Sunday Mass: St. Peter's Square, morning
- Chrism Mass (Holy Thursday morning): St. Peter's Basilica, closed to non-ticket holders
- Mass of the Lord's Supper (Holy Thursday evening): St. Peter's Basilica
- Way of the Cross (Good Friday evening): Colosseum, closes surrounding roads
- Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday evening): St. Peter's Basilica
- Easter Sunday Mass + Urbi et Orbi blessing: St. Peter's Square 10:15am and 12pm — expect ~200,000 in the square
If tickets are gone
- Check the Vatican site daily at 06:55 Rome time for cancellation releases
- Book a small-group tour with skip-the-line — separate inventory
- Book an early-access breakfast tour — premium inventory holds longest
- Shift to Easter Monday (April 6) — still busy but usually has late-availability slots
- Postpone to the week after (April 7 onward) — availability opens up dramatically
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Easter Week 2026?
Easter Sunday 2026 falls on April 5. 'Easter Week' or Holy Week runs Palm Sunday (March 29) through Easter Sunday (April 5), with the Triduum being Holy Thursday (April 2), Good Friday (April 3), and Holy Saturday (April 4). Easter Monday (April 6) is a public holiday but the museum is open.Is the Vatican Museums open during Easter Week?
Mostly yes with two closures. Open: Palm Sunday through Holy Wednesday (regular hours), Holy Thursday, Holy Saturday, Easter Monday. Closed: Easter Sunday (April 5) and Good Friday afternoon in some years (verify closer to date). Sistine Chapel access is restricted during any papal ceremony inside it.How far in advance should I book Easter Week tickets?
8 weeks minimum. For 2026 Easter (Mar 29–Apr 5), book by early February. Weekend slots and 9am–11am peak morning slots sell out first. By 3 weeks out only after-2pm slots typically remain. Are Vatican Museums tickets more expensive during Easter?
Official pricing is unchanged (€25 + €5 fee). Reseller premiums widen to €10–15 above official. Early-access and private tours run 25–40% above normal prices — book direct with the official site if possible. Can I attend Easter Mass in the Sistine Chapel?
No public Mass is held in the Sistine Chapel. Easter liturgies happen in St. Peter's Basilica or Square (papal Urbi et Orbi, Easter Vigil). Free but requires ticket booked via the Prefettura della Casa Pontificia (separate from museum tickets).Related Vatican guides
