Free Sunday saves the ticket price but costs flexibility: entry is walk-up only, the museums close at 14:00, and the last admission is 12:30. If your Rome days are tightly planned, a booked weekday slot is usually the better visit. How free Sunday works
- When: the last Sunday of the month, subject to the official calendar. The published rule excludes a last Sunday that coincides with Easter Sunday.
- Hours: 09:00–14:00. Final admission 12:30.
- Price: free general admission.
- Booking: free general admission is walk-up only. Guided tours may still be reserved through the official channels as paid products.
- Includes: the standard visitor route, including the Raphael Rooms, Gallery of Maps and the Sistine Chapel.
- Excludes: Vatican Gardens tours, the Necropolis (Scavi), and any separately ticketed experience.
Check the official hours and exceptions page before travelling.
Free Sunday dates in 2026
Jan 25Feb 22Mar 29Apr 26May 31Jun 28Jul 26Aug 30Sep 27Oct 25Nov 29Dec 27Dates follow the last-Sunday rule. Confirm the month on the official calendar closer to your visit, as the museums can adjust the schedule around Papal and liturgical events.
What to expect on the day
The queue forms outside the entrance on Viale Vaticano. We do not publish arrival-time or waiting-time figures for it: the museums do not measure or publish them, and they change with the season, the weather and the day's operations.
What is fixed is the schedule. Entry stops at 12:30 and the museums close at 14:00, so a late arrival can mean either no entry at all or a rushed walk through the route.
Practical preparation: arrive early, bring water and sun protection in summer, and decide in advance which rooms matter most to you so a short visit is still a good one.
Who it suits
- Residents and long-stay visitors who can queue and, if needed, come back another month.
- Budget travellers with a flexible morning and no other Vatican slot booked.
- Pilgrims for whom the free-entry policy carries meaning beyond convenience.
Who should book a normal slot instead
Anyone on a fixed itinerary, anyone travelling with small children or older visitors, and anyone with limited mobility who would rather not stand in an open-air queue of unknown length.
Reduced and free categories on other days
- Full admission: €20 at the ticket desk, or €25 through the official online portal (€20 plus the €5 reservation fee).
- Reduced admission: €10 at the desk, or €15 online (€10 plus the €5 reservation fee). Eligibility includes children aged 7–18 and qualifying students up to 25 with valid documentation.
- Children below the age of seven: enter free.
- Professional and accredited categories (for example ICOM members and accredited journalists) have their own documentation requirements — entry is never automatic, and the exact conditions are published by the museums.
See the Vatican Museums tickets guide for every category, and confirm current prices on the official ticket portal.
