First decide which access you want
The most important booking decision is not the price: it is whether you want the historic villa and gardens, the current exhibitions, or a particular event. Villa Medici’s official FAQ separates guided visits of the gardens and historic apartments from autonomous visits of temporary exhibitions. Certain spaces and artworks are accessible only on guided visits.
At a glance: the standard guided tour lasts about 90 minutes. The villa is closed on Tuesdays; hours are 9:30–19:00 with last entry 18:30, and exhibition rooms close at 18:30 — on a late tour, see the exhibition first (checked October 2026).
| Ticket type | What it covers | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Standard guided tour | Historic gardens and rooms, plus temporary exhibitions | Not unrestricted access to the whole estate |
| Exhibition ticket | Self-directed access to the named temporary exhibition | Not the guided-only gardens and apartments |
| Programme event | The activity and spaces specified in its listing | Not automatically a villa tour or exhibition ticket |
A tour ticket includes temporary exhibitions, but that inclusion does not mean the guide spends the full visit discussing the exhibition. Leave separate time for the show and confirm the exhibition rooms’ opening arrangements. If a specific artwork or historic room is essential, establish whether it is accessible on your date before buying.
Official guided-tour prices and eligibility
| Category | Standard public tour | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Full price | €18 | Ordinary adult admission |
| Reduced | €15 | Under 25, jobseekers, and fellows/members of foreign academies in Rome; valid proof required |
| Under 18 | Free | Select the appropriate category and bring age proof |
| Disabled visitors and companion | Free | Check arrangements and accessible spaces with the villa |
| Other free categories | See official list | Includes specified professional and institutional categories |
These are the standard guided-tour rates checked October 9, 2026, not a price list for every exhibition or special event. The official list also includes journalists, ICOM/ICOMOS cardholders and several named institutional groups. Membership benefits vary: do not treat an exhibition membership category as automatic free guided-tour admission. Use the full eligibility list and carry valid proof.
Villa Medici does not participate in free admission on the first Sunday of each month. That rule at some Italian museums is not transferable to this institution. Exhibition-only prices depend on the current programme, so check them on the official Visit and booking page rather than expecting one fixed rate.

How to book the right date and language
- Start from the villa’s Visit page and follow its official booking link to Ticketlandia.
- Select a standard public tour, exhibition or event. Avoid buying an exhibition ticket when your aim is the historic rooms.
- Choose the language and the time. Public tours are listed in English, French, Italian and Spanish; availability is language-specific.
- Select a valid admission category for each visitor and check the final total.
- Save the confirmation email and attached ticket. A digital ticket on your phone is accepted; printing is not required.
The official FAQ says online tour sales open about a month ahead. Same-day tickets can be bought up to 30 minutes before departure online or five minutes before departure on site, subject to availability. Those are sales cutoffs, not sensible arrival targets: allow time to reach the entrance and have the ticket ready.
Ordinary reservations cannot be made by telephone or email. If confirmation has not arrived, use the villa’s contact form with the email used for the purchase. Do not assume an incomplete payment has secured places, and do not make a duplicate purchase without checking the first transaction.
Changes, refunds and sold-out visits
For ordinary public tickets, the FAQ states that purchased tickets cannot be modified, exchanged or refunded. It also states there is no waiting list for sold-out guided tours. Choose the language and date carefully before paying; do not rely on a cancellation-release strategy to obtain a place.
Group visits, school activities and private visits have their own arrangements. Do not apply a group rescheduling clause to an ordinary public ticket. If booking through another seller, read that product’s conditions separately and establish what admission it actually includes. A seller’s terms cannot expand the estate areas open to visitors.
If the tour is unavailable, an exhibition visit is an alternative only if the exhibition interests you. It is not a workaround for entering the historic apartments. A free walk to Pincio is another option, or choose a different tour date. Our highlights guide helps decide whether the guided-only spaces are your main interest.
Before you pay: bags, family needs and access
No luggage storage or cloakroom is available. Small bags are permitted; suitcases, bulky bags, helmets, pets and pushchairs are not; if you travel with an assistance animal, ask the villa directly before booking. Arrange luggage storage elsewhere before arrival rather than expecting an exception at the gate. There is no public café inside, so place your food break outside the booked visit.
The official accessibility page lists garden access via a 96-metre ramp with an 11.5% gradient, partial access to exhibition rooms (three of eight), and no access to the historic apartments or Michel Piccoli cinema room for wheelchair users. This is a steep ramp, not a promise of an easy independent visit. There are no public lifts.
Contact Villa Medici before paying to discuss the route, assistance and which spaces you can visit. An accessible entrance into the estate does not make every room accessible.
Family tours are a different product from the standard adult tour. The visit page describes activities for children aged 5–11 with an accompanying adult, in Italian or French. Check the current session before choosing it for children who do not understand those languages. Keep the outdoor stops flexible using our half-day plan.
