Day tour or night tour?
- Day Tour — the standard visit. Ferries start early in the morning and return roughly every half hour, so you set your own pace. You get daylight on the exercise yard, the gardens and the ruins, and the widest choice of dates.
- Night Tour — an evening ferry crossing, with sunset views possible depending on the season and departure time. Night departures generally feel quieter than peak daytime visits because fewer visitors are on the island at once, and depending on the evening schedule the visit may include additional talks, demonstrations or access to areas not normally open during the Day Tour.
- Behind the Scenes — a small-group guided experience led by specialist interpretive staff into areas normally closed, followed by the evening programme. The most expensive ticket and the first to sell out, but the one people rave about.

How far ahead to book
Tickets are released about 90 days in advance and are non-transferable, so they are bought in your name and can be checked against ID. Rough guidance on timing:
- Summer and weekends: book as soon as your dates are fixed — several weeks ahead for the Day Tour, longer for evenings.
- Behind the Scenes: can be gone a couple of months ahead in high season.
