Anzio Day Trip From Rome: Beaches, History and Trains

Verdict: Anzio is easy to reach and rewarding — but it is three different day trips wearing one name. A beach day, a seafood-and-harbour day, and a Second World War history day each fill the available hours on their own. Trying to do all three means rushing the cemeteries, missing the tide of the afternoon and eating badly. Choose one, add a second only if it is adjacent, and Anzio is one of the best-value outings from Rome.
Is Anzio worth a day trip from Rome?
Beaches. Long sandy stretches either side of the harbour, with free public sections and beach clubs, all within walking distance of the station. Convenience is the selling point rather than scenery.
Seafood and the harbour. Anzio is a working fishing port, and the restaurants along the port are where Romans come for fish. This alone justifies the train fare.
Second World War history. The Allied landings of January 1944 took place here, and the beachhead fighting that followed lasted months. The town has a museum, and the war cemeteries and memorials in the Anzio–Nettuno area are among the most significant in Italy. For many visitors, this is the entire reason to come.

How to get from Rome to Anzio by train
- Direct regional trains normally depart Roma Termini. Check the individual service before attempting to board at another Rome station. This is a suburban regional line — no reservation, buy at a machine or in the app, validate paper tickets.
- Anzio station is roughly an hour from Rome, slightly uphill from the seafront. The centre and harbour are a 10–15 minute walk down; the nearest beaches about the same.
- Anzio or Nettuno? The line continues one stop to Nettuno, the terminus and a separate town with its own walled old centre. Some trains terminate at Nettuno and some at Anzio, so read the destination — and if you plan to see both, the single-stop hop between them is trivial.
- Returning. Roughly hourly, thinner on Sundays and public holidays, and busy on summer evenings. Check the board when you arrive.

Best beaches in Anzio
The coast either side of the harbour mixes free public stretches with licensed clubs, as everywhere in Italy. Free sections have no facilities and fill early on summer weekends; clubs rent umbrellas and loungers by the day, with showers, changing rooms and a bar.
Closest to the station are the town beaches, convenient and correspondingly crowded. Walking 20–30 minutes along the front towards the Riviera di Levante or towards Nettuno gets you noticeably more space and, in places, low cliffs and small coves rather than a flat strip.
Accessibility varies: club sections generally have boardwalks and facilities, while quieter stretches may involve steps down from the road. Seasonal crowding peaks in late July and August, when the trains from Rome are full too.
Anzio's Second World War sites
The landings. Allied forces came ashore at Anzio and Nettuno in January 1944 in an attempt to outflank the German defensive line south of Rome. The beachhead was contained for months of costly fighting before the breakout, and the casualties on both sides were severe. Standing on an ordinary beach where that happened is the point of the visit.
The local museum in Anzio documents the landings and the beachhead with photographs, weapons, uniforms and personal items. It is a small municipal museum with limited hours that can change at short notice — verify directly before you travel, and do not build the day around it without confirming.
Cemeteries and memorials. Commonwealth war cemeteries lie in the Anzio area and the Sicily–Rome American Cemetery and Memorial is at Nettuno. Grounds and visitor buildings keep separate hours, and the visitor centres in particular have restricted schedules.
Respect. These are burial grounds, not attractions. Dress appropriately, keep voices low, do not picnic or sunbathe, and be thoughtful about photography — particularly of individual graves and of other visitors, some of whom are family.
Transport. The museum is central. The cemeteries are on the edges of the towns: roughly half an hour on foot or a short taxi ride, and the Nettuno site is easiest reached by taking the train one stop first.

Most visitors should treat them as one destination: Anzio for lunch and the beach, Nettuno for the old town.
Where to eat seafood
The pattern is simple: restaurants cluster along the port, facing the moored fishing boats, and the menus follow the catch. Expect fritto misto, spaghetti with clams, grilled whole fish sold by weight, and raw crudo at the more ambitious places. Prices are lower than in central Rome for noticeably fresher fish.

Instead: look for a full room at 13:30, a written daily catch rather than a laminated tourist menu, and fish priced by the kilo. Reserve for Sunday lunch and summer weekends, when Roman families fill the port; midweek you can simply arrive.
Can you combine Anzio with other Lazio attractions?
Nettuno is the only combination worth making — adjacent, connected by a single train stop or an hour's seafront walk, and complementary rather than repetitive.
Everything else in the region sits on a different railway line out of Rome. Adding Sperlonga, the Castelli Romani or Ostia to an Anzio day would mean returning towards the city between destinations, which is a waste of a good afternoon. Do them on separate days instead.
