Finding food near one of Rome's busiest attractions can be surprisingly difficult. There are hundreds of cafés and restaurants around the Vatican Museums, but the closest place is not necessarily the best place.
For this guide, we used a simple rule: every place listed must have at least a 4.0/5 Google Maps rating and more than 300 Google reviews. The result is a mix of proper Roman restaurants and quick pizza or panini stops. Walking times are approximate and measured from the Vatican Museums exit on Viale Vaticano; a few options sit on the Borgo or St. Peter's side and are a longer walk from that exit.
One practical warning: many Roman restaurants close one day a week and pause between lunch and dinner service. Check the current opening hours in Google Maps before walking across the neighbourhood, especially on Sundays and Mondays.
Ratings and review observations checked August 14, 2026. Google Maps ratings and review counts change over time — tap any restaurant to open the current version in Google Maps.

Best restaurants near the Vatican Museums
Osteria delle Commari
Via Santamaura 23 · ~4.4/5 from 1,900+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
One of the easiest proper Roman restaurants to recommend after visiting the Vatican Museums because it is genuinely close to the museum side of the Vatican rather than over near St. Peter's. Expect familiar Roman dishes such as carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, meat dishes and seasonal specials. Works particularly well when you want a real sit-down lunch rather than another sandwich.
Best for: Roman lunch immediately after the Museums.
Trattoria Vaticano Giggi
Via Catone 10 · ~4.1/5 from 2,000+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
A traditional Roman trattoria between the Vatican Museums and the Ottaviano/St. Peter's side of the neighbourhood. A better fit for travellers looking for old-school Roman cooking than for a fashionable modern restaurant. Carbonara, cacio e pepe and other classic pasta dishes dominate the menu.
Best for: traditional Roman food without going far from the Vatican.
Il Sorpasso
Via Properzio 31/33 · ~4.4/5 from 4,000+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
Il Sorpasso sits farther into Prati and feels quite different from the restaurants immediately beside the Vatican. Combines pasta and cooked dishes with excellent cured meats, cheese and wine — especially good for a slower lunch, aperitivo or dinner. Reserving a table is sensible.
Best for: a long lunch, wine or dinner.
RIONE XIV Bistrot
Borgo Pio 21 · ~4.8/5 from 2,200+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
A tiny restaurant, so don't expect a huge dining room — that's part of its appeal. The menu focuses on Italian and Roman cooking, with pasta featuring heavily. When we checked reviews in August 2026, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, lasagna and truffle pasta came up repeatedly. Its rating is unusually strong for such a heavily visited area.
Best for: excellent pasta in a small, intimate restaurant.
Borghiciana Pastificio Artigianale
Borgo Pio 186 · ~4.6/5 from 5,200+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
Another tiny Borgo Pio option, but this one focuses heavily on fresh pasta. Especially useful when you want something more substantial than street food without committing to a long formal meal. Very limited seating, so queues aren't unusual.
Best for: fresh pasta and lasagna.
Osteria Ragno d'Oro
Via Silla 26 · ~4.6/5 from 4,700+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
One of the most established choices in Prati for classic Roman cooking. Think carbonara, amatriciana, gricia, saltimbocca and seasonal Roman dishes rather than modern reinterpretations. Also one of the stronger choices for dinner rather than simply grabbing food immediately after leaving the Museums.
Best for: classic Roman dinner.
Best quick lunch near the Vatican
You don't necessarily want a two-hour trattoria lunch after walking several kilometres through the Museums. These are the better choices for something quick.
200 Gradi
Piazza del Risorgimento 3 · ~4.6/5 from 5,400+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
One of our strongest recommendations for first-time visitors. Specialises in large filled panini with an enormous choice of combinations. Conveniently positioned between the Museums side and St. Peter's, making it particularly useful if you're visiting both on the same day.
Best for: fast lunch between the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's.
Panino Divino
Via dei Gracchi 11A · ~4.7/5 from 2,200+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
A small panini shop with meat, cheeses, vegetables and spreads assembled into substantial sandwiches. Limited seating, so think of it primarily as a quick lunch rather than somewhere to settle in for an hour.
Best for: panini and takeaway lunch.
Pizzarium Bonci
Via della Meloria 43 · ~4.1/5 from 14,000+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
Probably the most famous pizza al taglio shop anywhere around the Vatican. Pizza is cut to the amount you request and sold by weight, with toppings changing regularly. Bonci is divisive: many love it, others find queues and prices high for pizza by the slice.
Our verdict: worth knowing about, but don't treat it as the only good pizza near the Vatican.
Pizza Zizza
Via delle Fornaci 11 · ~4.7/5 from 3,700+ reviews · Open in Google Maps ↗
On the St. Peter's side rather than beside the Vatican Museums entrance, so it makes most sense after you've continued your sightseeing toward the Basilica. Casual, highly rated and useful when you want pizza without turning lunch into a major event.
Best for: casual pizza after St. Peter's.
Coffee and gelato, briefly
Two quick pointers, since most people want one of each on a Vatican day:
- Breakfast or coffee before your ticket: Trecaffè Leone IV (Via Leone IV 10) is the most practical option close to the museum entrance; Sciascia Caffè 1919 (Via Fabio Massimo 80/A) is the better destination if coffee itself is the point.
- Gelato after the visit: Old Bridge Gelateria (Viale dei Bastioni di Michelangelo 5) is the closest well-reviewed shop to the exit; L'Arena del Gelato (Via di Porta Castello 8) suits the Borgo and Castel Sant'Angelo side.

Where should you eat during a Vatican day?
The best restaurant depends on where you are when hunger hits.
Immediately after the Vatican Museums
- Osteria delle Commari for a proper meal.
- Old Bridge Gelateria for dessert.
- Trecaffè Leone IV for coffee, breakfast or something lighter.
Walking toward St. Peter's
- 200 Gradi for a quick panino.
- Panino Divino for another fast lunch option.
- Trattoria Vaticano Giggi if you'd rather sit down for Roman pasta.
After St. Peter's Basilica
- RIONE XIV Bistrot or Borghiciana Pastificio Artigianale for pasta.
- Pizza Zizza for pizza.
- L'Arena del Gelato for gelato before walking toward Castel Sant'Angelo.
How to avoid tourist-trap restaurants near the Vatican
Don't judge a restaurant solely by its street. There are good and bad places throughout the Vatican area — the warning signs below are more useful than the address.
Become cautious when a place has:
- Enormous photo menus on every panel.
- Staff actively trying to pull passers-by inside.
- A menu covering every possible Italian regional dish.
- A prominently advertised fixed "tourist menu."
Walking even a few streets into Prati also gives you far more choice than sitting at the first restaurant beside a major Vatican entrance. Prati is one of the most useful areas to eat around the Vatican precisely because it is also a residential and commercial neighbourhood rather than only a sightseeing zone.
Can you eat inside the Vatican Museums?
Yes, in the designated areas. The Vatican Museums have a self-service restaurant, a pizzeria, Bistrot La Pigna in the Pinecone Courtyard and several cafés. Food and drink cannot be consumed in the exhibition halls themselves.
They're useful if you are halfway through a long visit and don't want to leave. Ordinary admission is generally valid for a single entry, so check the ticket conditions shown on the official ticketing site or on your voucher before stepping out for lunch. For a proper Roman meal, we would usually eat after the museum visit rather than treating the Museums themselves as a dining destination.
