Correct entrance: Viale Vaticano, on the north side of the Vatican walls — not St Peter's Square.
Nearest metro: Line A, Ottaviano or Cipro.
Bring: your QR-code ticket, a small bag, and photo ID if you booked a reduced ticket.
Arrive: a little before your slot to allow for security. Check your booking confirmation for the arrival window it specifies.
Address and getting there
Viale Vaticano, 00165 Rome — the address to give a taxi driver or type into a map app.
By metro: Line A. Official directions list both Ottaviano and Cipro as useful stations; from either it is a short signposted walk to Viale Vaticano.
By bus: official guidance lists bus 49 stopping at the museum entrance; buses 32, 81 and 982 at Piazza Risorgimento; and 492 and 990 at Via Leone IV / Via degli Scipioni. Walking times from those stops vary — Piazza Risorgimento and Via Leone IV are several minutes away.
By tram: line 19 serves Piazza Risorgimento, then continue on foot.
By taxi: ask for "ingresso Musei Vaticani" rather than "San Pietro". Fares vary by distance, traffic and time of day, so check the meter or an official tariff table rather than a fixed quote.
On foot from St Peter's Square: roughly 12–15 minutes around the Vatican walls.
Full details are on the official directions page.
Where not to go
St Peter's Square and St Peter's Basilica are a separate site on the south side of Vatican City, with their own entrance and their own security queue. General entry to the Basilica is normally free and controlled through security; it is not part of your museum ticket.
Arriving at the square with a museum booking means an additional walk around the walls, which can put a timed entry at risk.
If you booked a Vatican Museums ticket, go straight to Viale Vaticano and visit the Basilica afterwards.
Security screening flow
- Find the right lane — pre-booked visitors follow the reservation signage; walk-up buyers join the ticket-purchase queue. Lane positions and wording change, so follow staff instructions rather than a fixed left/right rule.
- Screening — bags go through the scanner and visitors through the metal detector, as at an airport.
- Ticket scan — phone or printed ticket. Reduced and free tickets require matching documentation.
- Up to the museum level — escalators and lifts serve the upper floor.
- Before you start — the free cloakroom takes bags and objects that cannot be carried through the galleries; audio guides are rented at the dedicated desk (check the current rate at the desk or on the official site).
Entry is generally quicker with a pre-booked ticket; walk-up entry can be considerably slower in high season, though actual waiting times vary day to day and are not published.
How the priority lane works
"Skip-the-line" does not mean walking straight in. It means you have a reservation, so you avoid the ticket-purchase queue and go to security instead. Everyone passes screening. See the skip-the-line guide for what is worth booking.
Exits, and the internal route to St Peter's
Standard exit: most visitors leave through the main exit onto Viale Vaticano, which is where the Momo double-helix staircase sits. Group, operational and step-free exits vary, and staff may route visitors differently depending on the day.
The internal connection toward St Peter's: some authorised tour products may use a controlled internal route toward St Peter's when Vatican operations permit. It is not available to independent visitors as a guaranteed exit. Unless your exact tour explicitly includes it, use the normal museum exit and walk around the Vatican walls.
