Screening decisions are made by staff at the entrance. Where this guide says "generally", the museums do not publish a fixed rule.
Bags, umbrellas and the cloakroom
All visitors and bags pass through airport-style screening. Items that cannot be carried through the galleries go to the free cloakroom near the entrance.
- Luggage and suitcases: luggage, suitcases, large rucksacks and other containers considered unsuitable by staff must be deposited in the free cloakroom. Retrieve everything before closing — the cloakroom is not intended as general multi-day storage.
- Rucksacks and umbrellas: large or unsuitable rucksacks, medium and large umbrellas and standard non-telescopic umbrellas must be deposited. A small telescopic umbrella is not automatically prohibited. Staff make the final decision.
- No published dimensions: the museums do not publish a single official bag-size limit. Any 30×40×15 cm figure circulating online is not an official rule — screening staff decide on the day.
- Baby-changing bags are practical necessities and are normally carried through, subject to screening.
Food and drink
- Water: a bottle of water is generally fine, and drinking fountains are available along the route.
- Alcohol must be deposited in the cloakroom.
- Other food and drink may also be deposited in the cloakroom rather than carried through.
- Consumption is not permitted in the exhibition rooms. Use the designated refreshment areas — the cafés and self-service catering points.
Photography and video
Personal photography without flash is allowed in most areas. Video cameras must be deposited in the cloakroom, so follow local signage regarding video recording and temporary exhibitions. Flash, professional lighting and commercial shooting require permission from the museums.
The Vatican's current visitor rules prohibit photography and filming in the Sistine Chapel. Custodians enforce it, ask for silence, and will intervene if someone keeps recording. Repeated refusal can mean being escorted out.
The rules do not rely on the expired broadcaster-rights story as the operative visitor rule, and no fine schedule for visitor photography is published.
Some temporary exhibitions and loaned works carry their own photography restrictions — follow the room signage.
Selfie sticks, tripods, drones
- Selfie sticks, tripods and monopods: not permitted in the galleries; they go to the cloakroom.
- Handheld stabilisers: not covered by a published rule — expect staff discretion, and be prepared to leave one at the cloakroom.
- Drones: flying over Vatican City is prohibited.
- Cameras: personal DSLR and mirrorless cameras are allowed. Commercial or professional shoots require prior written authorisation.
Weapons, sharps and other prohibited items
Weapons of any kind, sharp objects such as knives and scissors, irritant sprays, and aerosols are prohibited and will be stopped at screening. Prescription medication is allowed. If you are unsure about an item, ask at the entrance rather than joining the queue with it, and check the official rules of conduct.
