Where to buy Vatican Museums tickets
Try the official Vatican Museums site first, then compare Tiqets, Klook, and Trip.com — trusted booking partners — if official slots are sold out.

The Vatican accepts PDF, email screenshot, wallet pass, or in-app ticket. What the scanner needs is a legible QR code — the format itself doesn't matter. Printing is not required.
- Accepted: Vatican Museums app, GetYourGuide/Tiqets/Viator vouchers, PDF, screenshots, Apple/Google Wallet.
- Rejected: a QR too dim to scan, a QR already scanned by someone else, a ticket for a different date or expired window.
- One person per QR: group tickets have one QR per person; don't screenshot one and share it.
Pro tip: screenshot the QR the night before AND star the confirmation email. If the venue Wi-Fi drops (it does), you still have offline access.
When ID is checked
- Standard adult tickets: ID not routinely checked. Bring one anyway — random spot-checks happen.
- Reduced fares (6–18, student, EU under-25): ID is checked at the turnstile. Bring a passport or an official student card. Screenshots of student cards are usually accepted.
- Free (under 6, disabled + carer): proof of age / disability card required.
- Papal Audience free tickets: no ID check, but the name on the reservation should match.
Your entry window (and the grace period)
Your ticket has a specific entry slot — for example, 10:00. In practice you have a 30-minute grace window: the QR will scan any time between your slot and 30 minutes after. Arriving 5 minutes before your slot is normally waved through.
Once you're inside, there's no closing constraint on how long you stay other than the museum's own closing time. The entry time controls the door, not your visit length.
If you arrive late
- Under 30 minutes late: just scan and walk in. No penalty.
- Over 30 minutes late: QR is voided. Go to the ticket desk on the right inside the lobby and ask to be re-slotted. Staff usually accommodate you if capacity allows — expect a 30–60 minute wait for the next slot.
- Third-party resellers (GetYourGuide, Tiqets): if the Vatican won't re-slot, contact the reseller — most offer a same-day rebooking or refund within 24 hours.
- Guided tours: if you miss the meeting time, the tour leaves without you. Refund policy depends on the operator; most are non-refundable if you no-show.
Entrance flow, door to lobby
- Approach the main entrance on Viale Vaticano — the pre-booked line is on the left.
- First turnstile: QR scan. Have it open on your phone before you reach the reader.
- Security screening: bag onto the X-ray belt, walk through the metal detector. (Full list of what's allowed → Security Rules.)
- Ticket desks on the left — skip if you already have a valid slot ticket.
- Escalator up to the main lobby. Audio guides on the right, cloakroom on the left, main visit route straight ahead.
Budget 15 minutes from the door to the lobby in peak season (April–October, mornings), 5 minutes off-peak.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my ticket be rejected if I show it on my phone?
No — phone screenshots and app tickets are the standard. The only rejection reasons are an unreadable QR (screen brightness too low), an expired entry window, or someone else already scanning that QR.Do they check ID at the door?
Not on standard adult tickets. ID is checked on reduced fares (student, EU under-25, child) and randomly at security. Bring a photo ID matching the name on any discounted ticket. How long is my entry window?
You have a 30-minute grace period after your booked time. Arrive within that window and the QR still scans. Miss it and the ticket is voided — no automatic reschedule. What happens if I arrive early?
You can enter up to 5 minutes before your slot at most gates. Earlier than that, staff will ask you to wait to one side rather than queue. Is there a separate entrance for pre-booked tickets?
Yes. The pre-booked line is the left channel at the Viale Vaticano entrance, clearly signposted 'Online Tickets / Prenotati'. Do not queue in the walk-up line — you'll wait for nothing.Related Vatican guides
