The Trevi Fountain is the monumental display end of an aqueduct commissioned by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in 19 BC. Its modern successor, the Acqua Vergine, still supplies the fountain today — but the popular version of this story is full of claims that do not survive checking.
This page separates what is documented from what is repeated: what Agrippa built, what happened to it in late antiquity, what the modern system supplies, and where you can actually see something of it.
Agrippa's aqueduct, 19 BC
Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa — Augustus's son-in-law and the man responsible for much of Rome's water infrastructure — brought the Aqua Virgo into the city in 19 BC. It served the Campus Martius, including his bath complex there, an area the older aqueducts served poorly because it lay low and to the west.
Supplying baths and monumental fountains was a major part of its purpose. It is often described as "the first aqueduct built for leisure rather than drinking water", which goes further than the evidence: Roman aqueducts routinely supplied a mixture of baths, fountains, public basins and private connections, and the sources do not frame the Virgo that way.
Was it really never interrupted?
This is the claim to drop. The aqueducts serving Rome were damaged and cut during the conflicts of late antiquity, and the city's supply collapsed for long periods. The Virgo line was subsequently repaired and rebuilt, notably in the mid-fifteenth century under Pope Nicholas V, and again in later papal restorations that produced the Acqua Vergine as Rome knew it in the early modern period.
"The only original aqueduct still in continuous use" and "the same water that flowed in 19 BC" are rhetorical rather than factual. The accurate statement is more interesting anyway: this is the one ancient line whose route and springs are still in service, through a system rebuilt many times over.
The underground route
The aqueduct runs roughly 20 km from springs east of the city, and unusually for a Roman aqueduct it is predominantly subterranean, with only limited stretches carried on arches. The gradient is very gentle, since the springs are only modestly higher than the delivery point in the centre — which is precisely why so much of it is tunnelled rather than raised.
We do not quote a percentage for how much lies underground, or a precise elevation drop; the figures circulating online are not attributable to a technical source. Explanations that the route was chosen for military security are plausible speculation, not documented Roman intent.
Why 'Virgo'?
Frontinus, the late first-century water commissioner whose treatise on Rome's aqueducts survives, records the tradition that a young girl showed soldiers the spring, and that the aqueduct took its name from her. The scene appears in relief on the Trevi façade. Whether the story is historical or a folk etymology attached later is unresolved; alternative explanations linking the name to the purity or coolness of the water are modern suggestions, and we do not present either as the "real" reason.
What the Acqua Vergine supplies today
The modern Acqua Vergine, managed by ACEA, feeds a group of monumental fountains in the historic centre, the Trevi among them. Other fountains traditionally associated with the system include the Barcaccia at the Spanish Steps and fountains in Piazza Navona; the exact configuration has changed with successive engineering works, so treat any fixed list as approximate.
On drinking water: Do not drink from the main basin and do not draw water from the monument — the official rules prohibit it. Use a designated nasone street fountain for drinking water. Rome's freestanding nasoni are part of the city's general drinking-water network; how many of them are fed specifically by the Acqua Vergine is not something we can state without an ACEA figure, so we do not.
A small rectangular basin with two spouts, traditionally called the Fountain of the Lovers (Fontanella degli Innamorati), stands on the viewer's right side of the monument. It is often wrongly called a nasone. It is part of the monument, and the official rules on drawing water from the fountain apply.

- Vicus Caprarius — Città dell'Acqua. A short walk from the fountain, several metres below street level. It preserves imperial-era structures including a water-distribution reservoir (castellum aquae) associated with the Acqua Vergine, plus later building remains. It is not the source of the aqueduct, and we do not claim you can walk inside a still-running original Roman channel — check what the site itself presents when you visit.
- Arches near Via del Nazareno. Ancient arches of the Virgo survive embedded in later buildings in this area — one of the few points where the line is visible above ground.
- The Trevi Fountain. The monumental terminus, with the relief of the naming legend on the façade.
- Fontana della Barcaccia at the Spanish Steps, traditionally supplied by the same system.
Why it has lasted
Roman channels of this kind were built in opus caementicium and lined with cocciopesto, a hydraulic mortar containing crushed ceramic that sets and remains durable in contact with water. Recent research on Roman concrete has identified self-healing behaviour associated with lime clasts, but that is a specific mechanism observed in particular samples, not a blanket rule that Roman concrete simply "gets harder underwater over time".
The more decisive factor is maintenance. Settling tanks along the route trap sediment, and the line has been inspected, cleaned and repaired repeatedly across two millennia — through papal restorations and, in the modern era, by ACEA. Water quality in Rome's supply is monitored by the utility; claims that this particular water is "the purest in the city" are not something we can substantiate.

Is the water in the Trevi Fountain really from a Roman aqueduct?
It comes through the Acqua Vergine, the modern system descended from Agrippa's Aqua Virgo of 19 BC. The line has been cut, repaired and substantially rebuilt over two thousand years, so it is a continuation of the ancient aqueduct rather than an unaltered Roman channel.
Has it flowed continuously since 19 BC?
No. Rome's aqueducts, including this one, were damaged and disrupted during the wars of late antiquity, and the line was later restored — most famously in the Renaissance under Pope Nicholas V. Claims of unbroken flow for over two thousand years are not supportable.
Where does it start?
At springs in the Salone area east of Rome. Most of the route runs underground and is driven by gravity alone. Vicus Caprarius, beneath the Trevi district, is not the source.
Can you drink the water at the Trevi Fountain?
Not from the monument. The official rules prohibit drawing water from the fountain, and the small side basin — traditionally called the Fountain of the Lovers — is part of the monument, not one of Rome's freestanding nasoni street fountains. Use a designated nasone instead.
