Walking From the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain

Two routes compared

Route A — direct

Pantheon → Piazza di Pietra (Temple of Hadrian) → Via delle Muratte → Trevi Fountain.

Route B — scenic

Pantheon → Sant'Ignazio → Temple of Hadrian → Piazza Colonna → Galleria Sciarra → Trevi Fountain.

• Approximately 1–1.3 km depending on the streets you pick
• 15–20 minutes of pure walking
• 45–75 minutes with visits and photographs

Galleria Sciarra is a private courtyard passage open during ordinary daytime access hours on weekdays. It is free, but it is not guaranteed to be open at night or on every weekend, so treat it as a bonus rather than a fixed stop.

Step-by-step route

1. Start: Piazza della Rotonda (in front of the Pantheon, fountain on your back). Walk east along Via dei Pastini, a narrow pedestrian street full of restaurants. (150m)
2. You'll arrive at Piazza di Pietra — dominated by the 11 surviving columns of the Temple of Hadrian (now embedded in the wall of the former stock exchange). Worth a 2-minute stop. (50m)
3. Continue east through Piazza di Pietra; the street becomes Via di Pietra. After 80 metres, turn right onto Via dei Bergamaschi. (80m)
4. You'll emerge into Piazza di Montecitorio — Italy's Chamber of Deputies, with a 6th-century BC Egyptian obelisk in the centre. Walk past it on the right side. (100m)
5. Continue south-east into Piazza Colonna, with the spectacular Column of Marcus Aurelius (a 2nd-century AD Roman victory column). Cross the piazza diagonally. (100m)
6. Take Via dei Sabini south, then turn left onto Via delle Muratte (the street that leads directly to the Trevi). (220m)
7. Walk 220 metres east on Via delle Muratte — and the Trevi Fountain appears suddenly at the end. Total: ~750 m, ~8 min.

Worthwhile detours

• Piazza Sant'Ignazio (2-min detour): from Via di Pietra, turn south to reach this exquisite rococo "stage-set" square. The Church of Sant'Ignazio has the most famous trompe-l'œil ceiling in Rome — a flat dome painted to look 3D. Free entry.
• Galleria Sciarra (1-min detour): just before reaching the Trevi, duck into this Art Nouveau covered passage off Via di Santa Maria in Via. Painted in 1885–1888, almost no tourists visit it. Free.
• Vicus Caprarius (2-min detour): the "City of Water" — an underground museum showing the ancient Roman insula and the aqueduct that feeds the Trevi. €5. Two minutes from the fountain.

The perfect coffee stop

Halfway along the route, in Piazza di Pietra, there are several quiet outdoor cafés in the shadow of the Temple of Hadrian. A bar-counter espresso runs €1.20–€1.50; a seated coffee in the piazza is €3–€5 — but the view of the Roman columns is worth it.

If you'd rather hold out for the best coffee in Rome, Sant'Eustachio Il Caffè is a 4-minute detour south of the Pantheon (the opposite direction). Many Romans consider it the best espresso in the city.

• Do it in this direction (Pantheon → Trevi), not reverse. The Trevi reveal at the end of Via delle Muratte is one of Rome's great "wow" moments.
• Walk it at golden hour (1 hour before sunset). The light on Piazza Sant'Ignazio is unforgettable.
• Pickpockets work this corridor. Standard precautions: bag in front, wallet inside pocket.
• Returning the same way at night? The route is well-lit and busy until past midnight.
