Almost nothing genuinely famous for coffee or gelato is within five minutes of the Trevi. The well-known places cluster around the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps, which is an 8–12 minute walk, and a couple are further still.

So this guide is organised by area with honest walking times rather than squeezed into a radius it does not fit. Opening days and prices change, and some historic venues have had recent commercial disputes — check before making a special trip.

Immediate Trevi area (0–5 minutes)

  • Gelateria San Crispino — the closest of the well-known gelaterias, a few minutes from the square. A short seasonal flavour list; served in cups by house policy. Individual flavours rotate, so do not travel for one in particular.
  • Antico Caffè San Marcello — an ordinary neighbourhood bar a few minutes away, the kind of place to drink an espresso standing at the counter.
  • Caffè Vergnano 1882 — a reliable chain bar close to the square, useful when you simply want a coffee without a detour.
  • Della Palma — a very large, very busy gelateria a few minutes away with a huge flavour count. We cannot verify sourcing claims about individual flavours, so judge it on the day.

Pantheon area (about 8–12 minutes)

  • Sant'Eustachio il Caffè — Rome's most famous espresso, sweetened by default unless you say otherwise. Standing room, always busy.
  • Tazza d'Oro — beside the Pantheon; the coffee granita with cream is the summer order.
  • Giolitti — the historic gelateria near Montecitorio, closer to 10 minutes than the six minutes usually quoted.

Spanish Steps area (about 10 minutes)

  • Antico Caffè Greco — the historic café on Via dei Condotti, roughly ten minutes away. Its tenancy has been the subject of a prolonged legal dispute, with conflicting reports of closure and reopening; verify its current status directly before planning a visit.
  • Fatamorgana (Corso area) — inventive gelato flavours, about eight to ten minutes on foot.

Worth a longer detour

  • Faro — Luminaries of Coffee — specialty coffee at Via Piave 55 in the Sallustiano area, well beyond a short Trevi walk. Go deliberately, not on the way past.
  • Roscioli Caffè — specialty coffee and pastry near Campo de' Fiori, around ten minutes or more depending on route.

How Roman coffee bars work

  • In many bars you pay at the till first and take the receipt to the counter; in others you pay after. Watch what the person ahead of you does.
  • Counter service (al banco) is normally cheaper than table service. Bars must display a price list showing both — read it before ordering rather than assuming a standard figure.
  • "Un caffè" means an espresso. A "latte" is a glass of milk.
  • Ordering a cappuccino after lunch is a cultural marker, not a rule anyone will enforce.

What to watch for

  • Gelato piled in bright fluorescent mounds above the rim of the tub — a sign of industrial paste and stabilisers.
  • Photo menus and staff soliciting from the doorway.
  • Table service in front of a monument where the price list is not visible before you sit.
  • Eating or drinking in the monumental area of the fountain, which is not permitted under the official rules.
