Design and meaning

Salvi's Trevi is a stage set: a giant proscenium glued onto the side of a palace, with water as the central performer. You experience it frontally, like an audience.

Bernini's Four Rivers is sculpture-in-the-round: you walk around it. Each side reveals a personified river god and a symbolic animal — horse, lion, sea-monster, armadillo — under an authentic Egyptian obelisk (the Pamphilj family advert for Pope Innocent X). It is a 360° object; the Trevi is a façade.

Bernini is one of the three or four greatest sculptors in history. His Río de la Plata figure throwing up a hand — supposedly recoiling from the "ugly" façade of Sant'Agnese across the square (a myth, but a good one) — is a textbook of Baroque dynamism.

Pietro Bracci's Oceanus at the Trevi is magnificent but more restrained, more classical. The hippocamps (sea-horses) by Filippo della Valle are arguably more memorable than the central figure.

History and patrons

  • Four Rivers — commissioned by Pope Innocent X Pamphilj for his family square. Bernini was officially out of favour but submitted a silver model that won the pope back.
  • Trevi — commissioned by Pope Clement XII Corsini in 1732 after a public design competition. Funded by lottery and wine taxes.
  • Both took roughly 11 years to build; neither pope lived to see the inauguration.
