Free Pantheon Entry: Who Qualifies & How It Works in 2026

General admission is €7, but several categories enter free. The most commonly missed ones are that all visitors under 18 enter free regardless of nationality, and that residents of the Municipality of Rome enter free. Admission is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of each month.
Free-entry categories at the Pantheon are set by the Italian Ministry of Culture for state museums and monuments, not invented site by site. Below we follow the Ministry's own wording rather than the looser versions repeated on travel sites. Verified August 2026.
Who enters free
- All visitors under 18, regardless of nationality (proof of age).
- Residents of the Municipality of Rome (proof of residence).
- Visitors with a disability, together with a family member or an accompanying person who can demonstrate belonging to health or social-assistance services.
- Eligible students and teaching staff in listed disciplines (architecture, archaeology, art history, cultural heritage, education, fine arts), plus certain research or study authorisations.
- People genuinely participating in a religious service in the basilica.
- Everyone on the first Sunday of the month (Domenica al Museo).
- ICOM members and licensed tour guides and tour leaders acting in a professional capacity, with valid documentation.
- Italian Ministry of Culture personnel on official duty.
- Journalists holding the current professional documentation the Ministry requires.
- School groups from institutions covered by the Ministry's provisions, with prior arrangement.
The Ministry updates this list, and the precise documentation it accepts is the deciding factor in practice. Check the official concession page before travelling if your entitlement is anything other than age or residence.

Free for all visitors under 18, regardless of nationality — bring proof of age. Nationality is irrelevant — the frequently repeated claim that only EU minors are free is wrong. How a free minor's admission is issued (as a zero-price ticket on the official portal, or on site) can vary with the channel you use and with group versus individual arrangements, so follow the procedure shown when you book rather than a fixed workflow described in a blog. Rome residents
Free for residents of Rome. Bring documentation showing residence in the Municipality of Rome. This category is separate from the EU youth reduction and from national free days, and it is the one most often missing from third-party guides.
Visitors with disabilities
The Ministry's concession covers the visitor with a disability together with a family member, or an accompanying person who can demonstrate belonging to health or social-assistance services — it is not an automatic free ticket for any travel companion.
On access: step-free access is via the external ramp on the Via della Minerva side of the building, avoiding the portico steps — not through the portico steps at the main door. The ancient floor is marble and gently convex, sloping away from the centre toward the drains — a mild but noticeable gradient for manual wheelchair users, and slippery when rain comes through the oculus. The Pantheon offers no commercial skip-the-line product, and visits are handled in order of arrival. The accessible ramp is an accessibility route; the official page does not specify whether staff provide any separate queue assistance, so ask staff on arrival. Students and study categories
Two things are often conflated. The €2 reduction is for EU citizens aged 18–25 — citizenship, not residence, and certain non-EU nationals may be treated equivalently under reciprocity arrangements. Separately, the Ministry's list provides free admission to eligible students and teaching staff in specific disciplines, and to holders of certain research or study authorisations, on production of the required documentation.
A generic student card is not by itself a free-entry entitlement, and being non-EU does not automatically mean full price. See student and senior tickets.
Attending a religious service
Access for participation in religious functions remains free — this is not restricted to Catholics, but it is for people genuinely taking part in the service, not for sightseeing. Tourist visits are not permitted during services. Saturday and the eve of public holidays: 17:00. Sunday and public holidays: 10:30. These are the only regularly scheduled Masses. Extra services on feast days are announced by the basilica and are not fixed year to year — always re-check the official liturgical schedule shortly before you visit.
First Sunday of the month
Free on the first Sunday of the month under the Ministry's Domenica al Museo scheme. Hours are the standard 09:00–19:00 and visits are handled in order of arrival. Free days attract more visitors, but we do not publish predicted queue times or crowd multipliers — no official measurement exists, and conditions vary with season and weather.
Other free days: what is and isn't certain
The first Sundays are dependable. Beyond that, be careful:
- European Heritage Days are a national programme, but they do not automatically mean free admission here — participating sites often use symbolic pricing or site-specific arrangements, announced shortly beforehand.
- Settimana dei Musei has run in some years and not others; it is not a dependable annual fixture.
- Individual ministerial free days are announced date by date.

When booking online, any additional fee is displayed at checkout. There is no separate skip-the-line product sold by the administration.
Documents and booking
Tickets are nominal, and staff may require the ticket together with matching identification. Whatever concession you are claiming, carry documentation that supports it: proof of age, proof of Rome residence, disability documentation, or the professional or study credential the Ministry lists.
Booking arrangements differ between individual visitors and groups, and the administration publishes no skip-the-line product for anyone, exempt or paying. The exterior
Piazza della Rotonda, the portico columns, the Agrippa inscription and the fountain cost nothing to see, and the lit facade after dark is one of central Rome's best free sights.
