Which Roman Forum entrance should you use?
Use Largo della Salara Vecchia on Via dei Fori Imperiali if you are coming from Piazza Venezia or the centre: it drops you straight into the middle of the Forum. Use the Via Sacra gate near the Colosseum and Arch of Titus if you have just left the Colosseum. Use Via di San Gregorio if you want to start on Palatine Hill and avoid the busiest gate.

Frequently asked questions
- Where is the main entrance to the Roman Forum?
- The most-used entrance is Largo della Salara Vecchia on Via dei Fori Imperiali, roughly halfway between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. There is also a gate on the Via Sacra near the Colosseum and a Palatine gate on Via di San Gregorio. Check the official site, as gate openings can change.
- Which entrance is least crowded?
- Via di San Gregorio, on the Palatine side, is often quieter than the Colosseum-side gate, especially in the morning. Starting there means you see the Palatine first and walk down into the Forum. Queues vary daily, so arriving at opening time remains the most reliable way to avoid a wait.
