What to expect around the fountain

Holy Week adds pilgrims to the ordinary spring visitor flow, and the Trevi sits on the walking route between the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and Piazza Venezia. Expect the area to be busy throughout the week, with heavier pressure over the Easter weekend.

Beyond that we do not publish a crowd ranking. Claims that one afternoon is "the absolute peak", or that crowds fall away on a particular weekday afterwards, are not supported by any data we can cite. The reliable pattern is the daily one: early morning and late evening are the calmer windows.

Trevi access during Holy Week

The surrounding public square stays free and open at any hour. Only the controlled inner perimeter closest to the basin has an entrance queue, a timetable and a €2 charge for most non-resident visitors. The controlled inner perimeter costs €2, is entered from Via della Stamperia and exited on Via dei Crociferi, with last entry at 21:00. On Mondays and Fridays it opens at 11:30; on other days at 09:00.

Note that Good Friday and Easter Monday both fall on those later-opening days in 2026 — and that access to the controlled area can be suspended or altered at short notice for public-order reasons during a week with this volume of visitors and events.

Closures and transport

• Road closures around the Colosseum on Good Friday evening, and around the Vatican over the Easter weekend, are set by date-specific police ordinances. Check them rather than assuming a standard perimeter.
• Access to St Peter's Square for the major celebrations is controlled with security checks; arrive well ahead.
• ATAC operates holiday timetables on public holidays and sometimes adjusts service around events. Confirm on the day.
• The Vatican Museums close on certain religious holidays — verify Easter-period closures on their official calendar before booking anything around them.

Weather in early April

Historically, early April in Rome averages roughly 8–19°C, with a fair chance of showers and long stretches of bright weather. That is a long-run average, not a forecast for the week — check an actual forecast a few days out, and bring a layer for the evening.

Visiting tips

• Book accommodation as far ahead as you can — Holy Week is one of the tightest weeks of the Roman year.
• Visit the fountain around 07:30. Even in a peak week the square is comparatively calm then.
• Book restaurants for the Easter weekend, and eat outside the 13:00–15:00 rush.
• Dress modestly if you plan to enter churches — shoulders and knees covered.
• If you are attending a papal celebration, plan the walk back on foot; the transport around the Vatican is heavily loaded afterwards.
