Rinascente, Via del Tritone 61 (5–7 min)

A large department store north-east of the fountain, and generally the most comfortable option in the area. Toilets are normally available during store opening hours — ask staff for the current floor, because internal arrangements change and floor numbers published online go out of date quickly.

Official P.Stop, Piazza di Spagna (7–10 min)

This is the strongest genuine public-toilet recommendation near the Trevi: it appears on Rome's official P.Stop list, with published opening hours of 08:30–22:30 and a small charge. It's a 7–10 minute walk north depending on your route and crowds, so it makes sense if you're heading towards the Spanish Steps anyway.

Cafés and bars: how to ask

Roman bar etiquette is straightforward: buy a small item at the counter, then ask "Posso usare il bagno?" Counter service is cheaper than sitting at a table. Prices and toilet policies vary between bars, and some in the immediate tourist core have stopped offering access entirely.

There are several bars within a minute of the piazza on Via del Lavatore and Via delle Muratte. We don't name a single guaranteed one, because access policy is a per-owner decision that changes without notice.

What we removed from this page, and why

An earlier version of this article listed several options we can no longer stand behind. Rather than quietly delete them, here is what changed:

• A "public WC at Via del Corso 201" — we could not find it on Rome's official P.Stop list or confirm it from any independent current source. Removed until physically reconfirmed.
• A toilet inside Galleria Sciarra — Galleria Sciarra is a private covered courtyard. We found no evidence of a public visitor toilet there.
• Church bathrooms — churches may have parish or staff facilities, but they are not public toilets and shouldn't be recommended as one.
• Walking into hotel lobbies — hotel toilets are for registered guests. If you need to ask, ask reception rather than assuming access.
• Sant'Eustachio Il Caffè — it's near the Pantheon, realistically 10–15 minutes from the Trevi, so it doesn't belong on a "near Trevi" shortlist.

Practical tips

• Carry coins. Municipal facilities often want exact change and don't reliably take cards.
• Carry tissues. Supplies run out in busy facilities by late afternoon.
• Go before you come. The Trevi–Pantheon–Navona core is dense and genuinely short of public toilets; use the facilities at your hotel, museum or restaurant first.
