The following are routinely presented as confirmed by other guides. For 31 December 2026 they are not:

• The venue and programme of the city's public celebration, and its start time.
• Whether there is an official municipal fireworks display, and where.
• Pedestrianisation times, security perimeters and bag-check arrangements around the Trevi.
• Extended metro and bus hours.
• Restrictions on glass, alcohol and personal fireworks.
• Specific road closures.
• Hotel and rooftop events, unless a venue currently has a bookable event page for the date.

Material circulating online about "New Year's Eve 2026" generally describes the night of 31 December 2025, which welcomed 2026. It does not establish this year's programme.

What Rome typically does

In recent years the city has staged a large free public celebration with music, usually in a single major open venue, and applied traffic and access restrictions across parts of the historic centre from the evening. Public transport has generally been extended past its usual finish. Treat all of that as a pattern rather than a promise: the venue has moved between years, and the restrictions are set by public-order decisions taken close to the date.

The Trevi on the night

The fountain is not a designated celebration venue, and the square around it is small, enclosed and reached by narrow streets. It fills, and it empties slowly. Expect a dense, informal crowd rather than an organised event, and no municipal display overhead.

The surrounding public square stays free and open at any hour. Only the controlled inner perimeter closest to the basin has an entrance queue, a timetable and a €2 charge for most non-resident visitors. The controlled inner perimeter follows its published timetable, and on a night like this it may be closed or managed differently for public-order reasons — check the official page on the day.

Transport and closures

• Assume you will walk. Taxi availability after midnight in the centre is very limited whatever the published arrangements.
• Check ATAC's own New Year notice for extended hours, and check which stations are open — stations inside security zones are sometimes closed or exit-only.
• Check Roma Capitale and the local police for the pedestrian and traffic zones, and for restrictions on glass, alcohol and personal fireworks.
• Plan your route out before midnight, not after. Streets around the fountain can be one-way for pedestrian flow.

Quieter alternatives

• An open viewpoint such as the Pincio terrace or the Janiculum, where you see the city rather than the back of someone's coat — subject to any access restrictions on the night.
• Dinner in a neighbourhood away from the centre, walking to a viewpoint before midnight.
• The Trevi early on 1 January, which is genuinely one of the quietest mornings of the year in the centre.

We name hotel and rooftop parties only when the venue has a currently bookable event page for the date. Otherwise you are being sold last year's event.

Safety

• Dense crowds in a confined square are the real risk factor. Stay near an exit street, and leave before the crush if the space fills.
• Keep valuables in front pockets or an inside layer; crowded celebration zones attract pickpocketing.
• Do not carry bottles into the crowd — glass is typically prohibited, and it is unwise in any case.
• Personal fireworks are hazardous in crowds and are usually restricted; keep away from anyone setting them off.
• Dress for cold: Roman winter evenings are commonly close to single figures Celsius.

What to check in the final week

Roma Capitale for the event programme and access ordinances; ATAC for transport hours and station closures; the local police notices for security zones and prohibited items; and the official Trevi Fountain page for perimeter access. All of these are published days, not months, in advance.

Are there fireworks at the Trevi Fountain?

There is no official fireworks display at the fountain. Whether the city stages fireworks elsewhere, and where, is announced close to the date — a public concert being held somewhere does not by itself mean an official fireworks show.

Will the Trevi area be closed or restricted on 31 December?

Rome commonly applies pedestrianisation, security perimeters and bag checks in the historic centre on New Year's Eve, but the exact zones and times are published by Roma Capitale and the police shortly beforehand. Do not plan around last year's timings.

Does the metro run late?

ATAC has extended service on past New Year's Eves. The extension, and how late it runs, is confirmed each year by ATAC — check their notice rather than assuming.

Can I bring drinks into the crowd?

Rome usually restricts glass containers, and sometimes alcohol, in celebration zones. We do not recommend carrying bottles into a tightly packed monumental space regardless of what is permitted.
