The single closest metro station to the Trevi Fountain is Barberini, on Metro Line A (orange). It's approximately 700 metres — an 8–10 minute walk depending on your exit, the crowds and your pace — and the most popular way to arrive.

But Barberini isn't always the best choice. If you're combining the Trevi with the Spanish Steps, Spagna is more scenic. If you're coming from Termini, sometimes a bus is faster than the metro transfer. Here's the full comparison.

Barberini — the closest station

  • Accessibility: elevators available; the walk is downhill on cobblestones
  • Best for: arrivals from Termini, San Giovanni, Cipro or Ottaviano (Vatican)

Barberini exits onto Piazza Barberini, a busy roundabout with Bernini's Triton Fountain in the centre. From there it's a straight downhill walk along Via del Tritone, which becomes pedestrian as you approach the Trevi.

Spagna — the scenic alternative

  • Line: A (orange)
  • Walking distance: ~850 m (9–12 minutes)
  • Direction from station: south, via the Spanish Steps and Via dei Due Macelli
  • Accessibility: elevators directly into Piazza di Spagna
  • Best for: combining the Spanish Steps + Trevi in one walk

Repubblica & other stations

  • Repubblica (Line A): 15-min walk. Useful only if you're coming from a hotel near Piazza della Repubblica.
  • Termini (Lines A & B): 22-min walk, or two Metro A stops to Barberini (Termini → Repubblica → Barberini) + 8–10 min walk. The metro is faster.
  • Colosseo (Line B): 18–20 min walk. Possible if you want to combine the Colosseum + Trevi, but the through-streets aren't as pleasant as from Spagna.
  • Cavour (Line B): 15-min walk through Monti. A nice cultural shortcut if you're staying in that neighbourhood.

  • Single ticket (BIT): €1.50 — valid 100 minutes on bus and tram plus one metro journey, including transfers between metro lines if you stay inside the controlled station area.
  • Roma 24H: €8.50 — unlimited metro/bus/tram.
  • Roma 48H: €15.00. Roma 72H: €22.00. Weekly (CIS): €24.00.
  • Where to buy: station machines, tabaccherie (look for the "T" sign), kiosks. The contactless tap-to-pay system is now active on most turnstiles — just tap your bank card.
  • Operating hours: 5:30 AM – 11:30 PM (Sun–Thu); until 1:30 AM (Fri & Sat).

Step-by-step from Barberini to the Trevi

  1. Exit Barberini station and head into Piazza Barberini (you'll see Bernini's Triton Fountain in the middle).
  2. Take Via del Tritone, the wide street heading west (downhill).
  3. Walk straight for about 350 metres — past Rinascente department store on your right.
  4. Turn left onto Via della Stamperia (small alley with a marble shop on the corner).
  5. Walk 50 metres — you'll suddenly emerge into the back of the Trevi's piazza. Total: 8–10 minutes.

A single BIT ticket costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes, including bus transfers, but only one metro journey (line-to-line transfers inside the paid area are fine). Practical tips

  • Avoid Barberini at rush hour (8–9 AM, 6–7 PM). The narrow platforms get extremely crowded.
  • Pickpockets target Line A and the metro-to-Trevi corridor. Keep wallets in front pockets, bags zipped, phones secured.
  • Buy a 24-hour ticket if you'll do more than 4 rides. It pays for itself.
  • If you can walk a couple of extra minutes, Spagna is more pleasant — busier station, but a much nicer walk.
