How to Get to the Trevi Fountain

Quick answer

The easiest way to reach the Trevi Fountain is usually to walk, if you are already in central Rome. From farther away, take Metro Line A to Barberini and walk roughly 700 metres — about 8–10 minutes — downhill along Via del Tritone. Taxis cannot normally drop you directly beside the fountain: the surrounding streets are narrow and heavily pedestrianised, so expect a short walk from Via del Tritone or Via del Corso.

By Metro

Rome's metro doesn't stop at the Trevi — but Line A (orange) has two stations within easy walking distance:

• Barberini — the closest. About 700 m — an 8–10 minute walk down Via del Tritone, then a quick left into the back streets. Best for arrivals from Termini, San Giovanni or Ottaviano (near the Vatican).
• Spagna — about a 10-minute walk, but more scenic. You exit at the top of the Spanish Steps, walk down them, then south to the Trevi.

A single BIT ticket costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes on buses and trams plus one metro journey — transfers between metro lines are allowed as long as you don't leave the controlled station area. ATAC day passes cost €8.50 (Roma 24H), €15 (48H) and €22 (72H). Buy it at the station machines or any tabaccheria. By Bus

Several bus lines stop within 4–5 minutes of the Trevi. The most useful stops are along Via del Tritone and Via del Corso:

• 51, 52, 53, 62, 63, 71, 80, 85, 160 — all run along Via del Tritone or Via del Corso. Get off at "Tritone/Fontana di Trevi" or "Corso/Minghetti".
• Night buses (N) — run after midnight when the metro closes. Useful for late-night fountain visits.

Tickets cost €1.50 and must be validated on board (yellow machine, stamp the ticket). For live schedules and route planning, use the official ATAC site, Moovit or Google Maps — Rome's buses are notoriously unreliable on paper, but these apps track them in real time.

By Taxi or rideshare

Official white taxis (with the "Roma Capitale" shield) can drop you on the edges of the pedestrian zone:

• Drop-off points: Via del Tritone, Via del Corso (Largo Chigi or Piazza Colonna), Piazza dell'Accademia di San Luca. All within 3–4 minutes' walk.
• Approximate fares: From Termini ~€10–12. From Trastevere ~€12. From Fiumicino airport, the flat rate to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls is €55 (don't accept a metered ride).
• Apps: FreeNow and itTaxi both work in Rome. Uber operates as "Uber Black" only and is more expensive than regular taxis.

From Termini station

Termini is Rome's main train and bus hub. From there:

• Metro (fastest): Line A direction Battistini, get off at Barberini — two stops (Termini → Repubblica → Barberini), about 5 minutes. Then an 8–10 minute walk. Total: ~15 min.
• Bus: Bus 85 towards Via del Tritone, ~15 min total. Central routes are diverted often, so confirm on ATAC or Google Maps before you set off.
• Walking: 20–22 min on foot via Via Nazionale and Via del Tritone. Doable if your luggage is light.
• Taxi: ~10–12 €, 8–12 min depending on traffic.

From the airport

• Fiumicino (FCO): Leonardo Express to Termini (32 min, €14), then metro/bus/walk. Or fixed-fare taxi at €55 directly to central Rome.
• Ciampino (CIA): SIT or Terravision shuttle bus to Termini (~40 min, €6–8). Or fixed-fare taxi at €40.

Why you should not drive to the Trevi

Don't. Rome's historic centre is a ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) — restricted-traffic zone — monitored by cameras 24/7. Driving in without a permit triggers an automatic fine of around €100, and there's no street parking near the Trevi anyway.

If you've rented a car for day trips, park outside the historic centre (Villa Borghese underground parking, Stazione Tiburtina, or the Saxa Rubra park-and-ride). Take public transport from there.
