History of Ostia Antica

Founded at the mouth (ostium) of the Tiber River, Ostia served as Rome's first colony and primary seaport for over 800 years. At its peak in the 2nd century AD, the city bustled with merchants, sailors, and workers from across the Mediterranean—a cosmopolitan hub where grain, oil, wine, and exotic goods flowed into the capital.

Unlike Pompeii, which was frozen in time by volcanic ash, Ostia was gradually abandoned as the harbor silted up and trade moved elsewhere. This slow decline preserved a substantial amount of the city, including apartment blocks (insulae), baths, and mosaics, though the two sites preserve different kinds of evidence rather than one being simply better preserved.
