Borghese Gallery requires a reservation — walk-ups are not admitted. Two-hour timed slots sell out weeks ahead in high season.
Vatican Museums tickets on the official portal (€20 admission + €5 official online booking = €25 total) routinely sell out for morning slots. The Vatican's own site warns that theirs is the only official online seller.
Domus Aurea opens Friday–Sunday only. The €26 educational visit includes the VR experience; limited €18 admission-only slots are also offered.
Book on release windows
The Colosseum is the classic case where the release calendar matters. Standard tickets, Underground and Attic open up to 30 days before the visit. The Full Experience Arena ticket currently opens 7 days ahead. A Night at the Colosseum (Tue/Thu) also opens 7 days ahead. Since the May 2026 ticket-office changes, standard 24-hour tickets can now also be bought on site, but Full Experience products disappear within hours of release.
Comfortable within 1–2 weeks
St. Peter's Dome (€17 stairs / €22 lift) rarely sells out but the timed reservation is non-refundable. Castel Sant'Angelo (€18) is usually fine on the day. The Pantheon now charges €7 and walk-in queues move quickly.
No need to book ahead
The Capitoline Museums (€15), Trajan's Market (€15), Baths of Caracalla (€8) and Hadrian's Villa (€15) rarely sell out. Buy on the day.
